Fast facts:
- The city has in operation for each storm:
- 7 large snow plows with sanders;
- 2 1-ton small snow plows;
- 1 grader to break loose snow pack;
- 2 backhoes and 1 loader.
- There are 455 lane miles in Commerce City; 242 lane miles on priority streets.
- Some roads within the city are maintained by CDOT and others by the county.
- In response to the needs which arose during the storms of 2006/2007, the city adopted a new snow plan and developed and adopted and emergency snow plan.
Priority Street Designations:

Priority 1: Major arterials considered to be the minimum network, which must be kept open to provide a transportation system connecting hospitals, fire stations, police stations, and other emergency units.
Priority 2: All remaining arterials and selected collectors completing the network covering the major traffic volume streets or providing access to schools.
Priority 3: All remaining collectors, bus routes, and hilly areas.
Priority 4: Streets primarily located in residential areas. These streets are plowed only when snow accumulations completely block traffic movement.
Storm Classifications:
Class 1 Storm: A storm predicted to last for less than 12 hours with anticipated snow accumulations of 4 inches or less.
Class 2 Storm: A storm predicted to last for more than 12 hours with anticipated snow accumulations of between 4 and 8 inches.
Class 3 Storm: A storm predicted to be extreme in nature with snow accumulations on road surfaces at depths greater than 8inches, accompanied with strong or gusting winds that create drifting and expected to last for 24 hours or more.
Priority Street Designations:
The Emergency Snow Plan will be activated if specific criteria are met,
- Twelve inches or more of actual or projected snow.
- Issuance of a Blizzard Warning by the National Weather Service.
- At the discretion of the City Manager, Chief of Police, Emergency Manager, or Street Maintenance Manager.
