Emergency management

Division: Administration and Information Operations

Emergency Management is responsible for planning, training, equipment, interagency cooperation and coordination, and public education to deal with significant natural or man-made disasters.  The office prepares the city to be ready to bring all city resources to bear, and those of any partner agencies and private organizations, to protect the citizens of Commerce City during a disaster.

Who does it?

This program is overseen by the emergency manager; the Office of Emergency Management is part of the Police Department but the emergency manager works closely with all departments to achieve program goals.

Personal Preparedness

The key to personal safety during a disaster is to have all needed food, water, medications, and other personal needs.    It is crucial that you have ability to care for yourself and your family for at least 72 hours. 

Every few years In Colorado, blizzards can make it impossible to travel for at least that long.

Warning Tower Program

Commerce City has a series of warning towers spread across the City.  These towers warn citizens of actual or impending threats, such as tornadoes, severe storms, life-threatening hail, etc.   The warning tower system can also be used to inform citizens of man-made hazards or to issue evacuation orders.
