Citizen Police Academy
Division: Patrol Operations
The Citizens’ Police Academy is designed to build strong and lasting relationships between the police department and the citizens of Commerce City by creating awareness and promoting cooperation. Alumni say the academy has given them a better understanding of the day-to-day operations of the department. The classes are beneficial in giving participants direct insight into what a Commerce City officer sees on a daily basis.
During the 12-week class, academy participants received an overview of each division, ADCOM, and the District Attorney’s office. Hands-on experience with crime scene investigation, building searches, traffic stops and domestic violence scenarios are also part of the training. In addition to classroom exercises and practical experience, participants take part in the ride-along program, which allows citizens to ride with a patrol officer during a regular shift and experience what it is like “on the streets” of Commerce City.
