Division: Administration and Information Operations
The Traffic Unit provides quality, proactive traffic enforcement with the goal of reducing property damage and injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents. In response to community support, the unit concentrates its enforcement in school and construction zones. The unit also responds to specific citizen requests.
The traffic unit issues approximately 65-70% of all traffic summonses for the police department. Their efforts have resulted in a 21% decrease in the total number of crashes of 2005. Members of the unit are trained in accident reconstruction and are responsible for the investigation of serious injury and fatal crashes.
Technology increases the quality of services provided. The unit uses state-of-the-art LASER and RADAR speed measuring devices, two RADAR-controlled speed trailers used as educational tools, and a laser system that is capable of creating 3-Dimensional diagrams.
Every 15-minutes Program
The Traffic Unit is involved in the Every 15-minutes program. This 1½ day program teaches students of the devastating effects of drinking and driving, without real-life tragedy.
