Departmental Training

Return to the Professional Standards Unit

The Commerce City Police Department is committed to providing top-notch training to our officers. Each officer receives 10 hours of monthly training on topics ranging from community policing to firearms to rapid response to school shootings.

Outside training

In addition to monthly in-service training, officers receive periodic “briefing training” documents. The employee completes the training as written and forwards it for approval.

Each April, Colorado Intergovernmental Resource Sharing Agency (C.I.R.S.A.) conducts an audit of the city. The Professional Standards Unit makes sure the appropriate training has taken place and that there is proper documentation of training and policies as required by the audit.

In-house Training Academy

With the increased growth in Commerce City, the police department has grown. The department hires based upon need throughout each calendar year. Prospective employees must successfully complete an interview process, background screening, and physical and psychological testing.

Once hired the employee goes through a training process which includes a five-week in-house training program and a 16-week Field Training Program.
