Ask c3gov - Older Adults & Seniors - Senior Tax Rebate

Senior citizens are encouraged to apply for partial property tax refunds. Applicants must be 62 or older by Nov. 1, 2006, and they must have lived in a home or an apartment in the city limits during 2005.

Applications are automatically sent to past participants. New applicants can obtain an application at City Hall, 5291 E. 60th Ave., by calling the Commerce City’s Finance Department at (303) 289-3627 or by printing the application listed below. Only one person in the household is required to be 62 or older, and only one refund will be given to each household.

A refund of $3 per month is offered to homeowners. If homeowners paid more than $36 in city property tax in 2005, they are eligible to be refunded 100 percent of the taxes paid. Renters are entitled to a refund of $2.50 per month.

Last year, more than 600 senior citizens applied for the refund. The city is working to increase that number by informing more senior citizens about the refund.

The deadline for 2006 applications is Nov. 1, 2006. For more information regarding this program, call the City's Finance Department at (303) 289-3627.
