The Rocky Mountain National Wildlife Refuge

Rocky Mountain National Wildlife Refuge borders Commerce City and offers a variety of outdoor activities and programs. Within the Refuge’s boundary, a diverse population of wildlife thrives among wetlands, woodlands, and shortgrass prairie. More than 300 species of wildlife makes the Refuge their home either seasonally or year round including birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.

Free wildlife viewing tours and nature programs are offered every weekend by reservation. Visitors also may drop-in on Saturdays and Sundays to hike more than 8 miles of trail or discover nature in the Visitors Center’s Wildlife Learning Lab. Catch and release fishing is available for all ages from late spring to early fall with a Refuge permit and a $3.00 recreation fee for anglers 16 years of age and older. Special public events are help twice each year celebrating National Trails and Fishing Week in June and National Wildlife Refuge Week in October.
