IN COMMERCE CITY
Residents of Commerce City know that the best kept secret of Colorado is right in their own backyard: Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (RMANWR). With more than 12,000 acres, it is one of the largest urban wildlife parks in the country. Wildlife abounds on the Refuge, and visitors may see fox, deer, eagles, coyotes and the Refuge’s newest residents, bison. For more information on touring the Refuge, call 303-289-0930.
Other recreational opportunities abound with a recreation center, 18 parks, a championship golf course and nearly 30 miles of walking and biking trails. To learn more, click visit Parks and Recreation on this Web site, or call 303-289-3760.
The Prairie Gateway, 917 acres that border the western edge of the RMANWR, is the site of the city’s Civic Center and Justice Center and Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, an 18,000-seat stadium that’s home to the Major League Soccer team Colorado Rapids and the Mile High Music Festival. For more information on Rapids’ soccer, call 303-727-3500; for more information about the music festival, visit www.milehighmusicfestival.com.
The Prairie Gateway is also the site of Commerce City’s new state-of-the-art high school and community college. And with more than 200 acres of open space and parks, the Prairie Gateway enhances this already blossoming community.
